Master Intership: Outer Retinal Influence on Ganglion Cell Surround Responses

At two places in the retina lateral interactions take place; at the horizontal cell layer and at the amacrine cell layer. The lateral interactions at the horizontal cell layer are the basis for the so-called center/surround organization of bipolar cells. How much horizontal cell activity contributes to the surround of ganglion cells is a matter of debate. In this project we will determine how much of the ganglion cell surround is generated at the lataral interactions at the horizontal cell layer. Electrophysiological recordings will be made of ganglion cells in fish with and without an outer retinal feedback pathway.
